WATERBABY

I wish I could say the following poem is mine, but alas it isn't.  But I LOOOOVE it!!  My friend Ashley is a crazy good poet and I wanted to share this piece.  Make sure to visit HER BLOG and read some of her other stuff.  Love ya, Ash!!

WATERBABY

If I too should have a daughter, I’ll name her after a racehorse. Her birth certificate will read Winning Colors or Eight Belles or Genuine Risk and I’ll send her galloping, un-jockeyed, into the brave little worlds of her own invention, cheering from the sidelines in the way that only mothers do, kissing her wobbly knees and glowing eyes and letting my dear little filly roam unbridled before the bit is hers to chew.

I will tell her that her skeleton is made of wishbones, that she lives in a world of shooting stars and dandelions and clocks set to 11:11.

I’ll teach her that life is merely the stories between the bookends of birth and death and that it isn’t worth re-reading the Encyclopedia of Heartache and Failure volumes 1, 2, and 3 when you can write masterpieces of your own. Don’t you dare let the world determine what you’re worth, I’ll say.

Make waves, darling, rock the sailboats of all the people who said you’d never make it, but don’t leave them to drown because your momma raised you better than that. Be kind to the people who live in glass houses, because those houses are actually chrysalides metamorphosing into butterflies and the minute you throw a stone, you interrupt the transformation of something ugly to something beautiful. And sure, a snake that sheds its skin is still a snake, but if you just remember that a few sweet notes is all it takes to charm a cobra, you can send any serpent back to the tiny straw world it belongs to.

I will tell her that all I know about making people like you is to remember that people are plants and you are the sun, sending out beams of light that make their chloroplasts glow green with new life. If your goal is to photosynthesize and pollinate everywhere you go, you won’t be able to see the trees for the forest of friends that stand in the way.

And of romance, I don’t have a clue. All I know is that your momma is a river and your daddy is an oasis and that you darling, are a waterbaby, skipping stones across the both of us so if you want to know love, I’ll show you the ripples on my skin and say: here, this is where you have touched me, and now my soul will never be still.
